Spellers of the world, unite!

Brentwood held its annual Spelling Bee in January and things kicked off with the Grade 9s. Eight brave students stood in their house colours on the Killy Theatre stage, each willing to do their best at unravelling the difficult letterings. The contestants were quickly halved, leaving one contestant from Rogers/Allard and MackEllis each, with both Whittall/Alex spellers surviving. Each speller stepped up to the mic to take their stab at increasingly challenging words, and from this chaos and madness, a champion was born. MackEllis came out on top.

The Grade 10 competition was more quickly won. The throng thinned, leaving two spellers head to head in a spelling frenzy. Allard-Rogers conquereded, leaving her rival dejected and in the dust.

The Grade 11s were a colourful bunch, with Ben S showing up in an inflatable blue ball for Privett, but even his sense of style couldn’t conquer the prowess of Alex House, and he was overcome as she pummelled him with her knowledge of the English language.

Boisterous interludes brought about by cow bells occasionally halted the competition, but not the spelling. Chants of “Juan, Juan, bring it on!” rallied around the theatre as former Grade 11 Spelling Bee Champion Juan Q ran on to the stage to face off against audience members. To the amazement of all, Juan only lost one face off. Juan on number one!

Calvin S and Emilia G were marvelous hosts and their non-scripted banter was full of warmth and laughter. Toby D and Raveena K were attentive in their listening, making sure any and all errors were caught. All eight interhouse captains were on guard for cheaters, even going so far as to remove bad audience members, sometimes more than once. Oh, Ted!

Thanks to Dan E and Gavin S for being the muscle on stage and to the debate club for hosting this excellent event. A special thanks to Mrs. Day Reynolds for organizing and preparing the Bee. It was a hive abuzz with fun!
