The Cake Race – How Sweet it Is!

“It is a day of cake, it is a day of racing” says Renee L, Hope ’16 when I ask her to describe Brentwood’s annual Cake Race. While rather simple, it does encapsulate the two main phases of the afternoon: cupcakes and racing. The Cake Race is the rowing program’s end-of-term event. All the members of the BCRC are randomly assigned to boats: everyone is mixed up – novices and experienced people, boys and girls, juniors and seniors – and what is created are diverse crews of people that have never raced together before. They are given one dry run/practice day and are then pitted against each other in a highly anticipated race. But that’s not all! Each boat must also choose a theme and dress up – the most creative boat with the best costumes (judged by Mr. Patel) wins a prize. Coach Debbie Sage told me that this is one of her favourite races of the year – almost more exciting than the Brentwood Regatta. When I inquired as to why, she said, “Because there are such mixed crews on the water and seeing them come together and pull together in a race is incredible.” So who won the race? Coxed by Emily L, Mack ’16 an eight with a theme based of the movie “Up!” pulled ahead and gained a victory. And the costume contest? An eight dressed up as a Christmas tree won the costume contest! Finally, after all the boats had been put away, the rowers were given a well-deserved treat – cupcakes! And on that sweet note, first term rowing concluded. Neha T, Allard ’16
