Thoughts on Term Two

The following is the text of Nick W’s address to the school last Thursday.

Today is Feb. 20th, 2014. We are quickly approaching the end of second term at Brentwood, and many of us already have our eyes set on the sunny days of third term, but I’d encourage you to do more or less the opposite: slow things down and appreciate our days as they are given to us now. I’d like to take a moment of appreciation for our quickly dwindling days of term two. I think that second term life at Brentwood has a much worse reputation than it deserves. I admit that not much beats a third term afternoon on the field, but amidst the misty, damp days of second term lie hidden gems that are far too often overlooked. For instance, I find myself in awe of the incredible sunrises that we witness on a clear, crisp winter day as we walk to Crooks Hall for breakfast. Rare, or not-so-rare, moments like that are often lost in complaints about the rainy days and forgotten, so I urge you to take advantage of these days. By the way, there are still many things to look forward to in these remaining weeks of second term, such as Alex Open House, Fiddler on the Roof, even the Junior/Senior rugby team taking on Kelsey this afternoon. Ladies and gentlemen, stop and smell the roses, or rather the frozen stems where roses would normally bloom. You never know, they might smell just as nice. Nicholas W, Head Prefect, Privett ‘14
