Winter Is Here

Winter Is Here

January has come and the first faint flurries have already deposited their icy presence on campus.  In case you’ve never read The Little Engine That Could and your parents were into that hip, progressive kind of parenting in which you read only War and Peace internet fan fiction, as Academic Head Prefect I will give you helpful tips to help get you through Term 2. 1. Just keep telling yourself “at least I’m not a child in the Industrial Revolution.” Back in those days children used to be subjected to all sorts of horrific jobs that we would consider quite distasteful nowadays. For example, children would be used as chimney sweeps, because of their small bodies. Instead of a hard unit test or end of term project, children back then would be constricted in the claustrophobic chambers of a chimney, entombed in sooty blackness, sweeping their sorry lives away. Keep things in perspective! Unless you are on chimney sweep duty this week, suck it up. 2. Keep up your healthy diet. Try a vegan dish: crème brulée, buffalo burger, and hot chocolate! Delicious and nutritious and suspicious. Or, try being gluten free for a day, I hear it does wonders for your tummy!   3. Go skiing. Every Sunday this term the school will run a trip up to Mount Washington where you can ski, snowboard, and tube. Late January will also feature a school-wide midweek ski day. 4. Attend a Showcase game: Senior Boys Basketball, Senior Girls Basketball, or Hockey. Take your pick or attend them all: spirits will be high. All of our sports teams will have home games including some excellent tournaments (Ross Cup, Countdown to Playoffs) so get over to the Woodward Sportsplex. 5. Get ready for The Boy Friend. More than 100 members of our community will be in high gear preparing for and performing this year’s musical. 6. Remember there are no exams – and not even an Assessment Week – this term. 7. We have passed the winter solstice: the days are getting longer. 8. Be happy. Far too many of us educated young feel the stress of high school and let it drag us downwards. Do not let this happen. When you cannot find happiness in the little things, remember that in early February, less than a month from now, we will be enjoying midterm. January is a month to savor, and it is already upon us.
