Academic Courses by Grade
Brentwood offers a challenging curriculum that is diverse and immersive. Throughout their time here, students are encouraged to explore different areas of study as they build an understanding of the courses that offer them the most engagement and success. Identifying these areas of strength creates a solid foundation for the university application process.
As students progress through the grades, they are granted more flexibility and range to choose courses that best fit their own educational goals. The hallmark of the Grade 12 academics program is the degree of freedom that students have to choose courses that fulfill the needs of those post-secondary plans.
Grade 8
The Brentwood Grade 8 Program has its own independent timetable, purpose, and goals. This specific program—thoughtfully and passionately designed by founding instructor Wendy Patel and enriched by the program leaders that followed her—prepares students for Brentwood’s intense and immersive Grade 9-12 post-secondary preparatory program.
Grade 8 at Brentwood is all about supporting bold young students through their personal and unique development of executive functioning—part of the “scaffolding” that we believe will set them up for success in the years to come.
Brentwood’s impressive facilities and some of its programs are accessible to Grade 8s, but this program is uniquely designed with a five-day schedule—primarily catering to day students, and intentionally closer to a “standard” school schedule in order to aid the transition to our six-day Tripartite Program.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Participation in the Brentwood arts and athletics programs is not mandatory for Grade 8 students—but interested and capable students are welcome to try out for competitive teams and to take these extra-curricular classes (co-curricular for grades 9-12), should they choose to make the commitment.
Arts programs run for the full length of the school year on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Athletics programs take place on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons. During each of the fall, winter, and spring terms there are different sports to choose from—you can change it up each term or pursue a sport that you love in all of its available offerings. Our competitive teams will often practice or compete on more than three days per week, so this time commitment should be taken into consideration by anyone in the Grade 8 program who is keen to join in.

Grade 9 Courses
This incredibly important year lays the foundation—what we think of as “the scaffolding”—for every learning experience to follow. Often the first year that a new student will spend at the School, Grade 9 at Brentwood presents each individual (including those continuing on from the Brentwood Grade 8 Program) with an integrated program designed to develop metacognition—learning to learn.
The Metamorphosis 9 class is illustrative of this philosophy—challenging and stimulating the students through a broad range of creative, STEM-based, and collaborative learning experiences.
Students are presented with a range of academic activities to strengthen and expand their use of information technology and to develop their skills in displaying and manipulating data. Experiential methods are employed, together with technology, to bring concrete examples to the principles taught in the classroom. The marriage of the theoretical and practical can be very powerful. Collaborative learning strategies and the ability to participate as an effective member of a team are equally important. All students are engaged in a curriculum that enhances their appreciation and understanding of global challenges as well as opportunities.
Beginner Mandarin
This course covers all language competencies: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will develop these skills by immersing themselves in a Mandarin-rich classroom environment supported by visual aids such as posters, signs, and gestures. Language acquisition is fostered through storytelling and engaging classroom discussions. Cultural exploration is an integral part of the course. Activities include making bubble tea, crafting mooncakes for the Moon Festival, writing Spring Couplets, traditional paper-cutting, and participating in a field trip to Victoria’s Chinatown for Lunar New Year.
English 9
English 9 is a foundational language course that aims to build essential literacy and communication skills. Students will read independently as well as assigned nonfiction prose, novels, short fiction and verse. Students will be introduced to the writing process, writing approximately once a week in a variety of styles, with particular attention to artistic description, the expository paragraph, and the keyhole essay.
French 9
This course is designed to accommodate both beginners to the language and students who have had some previous French instruction. Listening, speaking, and writing skills are emphasized, along with a sound grammatical understanding. Students will be exposed to French through storytelling, which will facilitate genuine language acquisition. Any student who already speaks or has studied a Romance language (Latin, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or Romanian) would also feel at home in this course.
Mathematics 9
The Math 9 curriculum focuses on problem-based learning to help students connect math to the real world. The goal is for students to develop deep mathematical understanding, procedural fluency, logical reasoning, and analytic and creative thinking by actively investigating problems and finding solutions. Units of study include: operations with rational numbers; exponents and exponent laws; operations with polynomials; two-variable linear relations and equations; spatial proportional reasoning; statistics in society.
Metamorphosis 9
Metamorphosis 9 is an innovative Grade 9 program that combines three courses: Science 9, Social Studies 9, and Applied Design, Skills and Technology 9.
The integrated nature of the course includes mini-lectures, labs, assisgnments, project-based activities, simulations, design challenges, field trips and much more. Students have the opportunity to work in several settings and are exposed to a variety of learning methodologies. Community involvement, which includes field trips across the island, is also incorporated. Additionally, students learn to manage and improve their executive functioning skills as we focus on developing these essential skills. Perhaps most importantly, the students develop a thorough understanding of who they are as learners and set themselves up for success in the demanding rigour of senior courses.
Spanish 9
This course is designed to accommodate both beginners to the language and students who have had some previous Spanish instruction. Listening, speaking, and writing skills are emphasized, along with a sound grammatical understanding. Students will be introduced to Spanish through storytelling, which will facilitate genuine language acquisition. Most of the instruction in this course is conducted in Spanish through comprehensible input. Students are encouraged to communicate in Spanish as much as possible, and the class includes a strong cultural component that introduces students to various traditions from the Spanish-speaking world.
Grade 10 Courses
Grade 10 builds on the foundational skills of Grade 9 by encouraging students to become more confident in taking risks scholastically as they explore a variety of academic disciplines and interests and discover their passions and strengths.
A wide selection of electives are available to provide a basis for advanced study in the senior grades, and a preview of more specialized areas of study. Cross-curricular themes are established to help students connect their areas of knowledge by providing a context of key ideas that transcend subject boundaries.
The Grade 10 curriculum has optional units to further expand the student experience. Integrated into the academics timetable are learning outcomes associated with Planning 10—designed to help students with a wide range of objectives, from post-secondary planning to improving organizational skills through lectures, discussions, and consultation with their advisor(s). Health and career education, as well as financial literacy, form important strands of this coursework.
Our aim throughout is to enable students to develop life skills, become self-directed, set goals, make thoughtful decisions, and take control of their personal planning.
AP Seminar 11
This course is aimed at building and refining high-level reading, thinking, discussion and research skills. It explores contemporary issues and provides students with a framework for pursuing academically rigorous research in an area of personal interest. Students will explore their chosen themes through collaborative discussions and in-depth research papers, building a foundation for critical analysis. They will further refine their communication skills by mastering persuasive writing and practicing public speaking. This course is best suited for students with solid foundations in close reading and scholarly writing who want to lean into big research projects and who are passionate about exploring real-world issues across all subjects. Students will write the AP Seminar exam in May.
Beginner French
This course will offer students who did not begin Core French in the elementary grades the opportunity to pursue French at the secondary level. It is a course for beginners, designed for anyone with no French knowledge who wants to learn. The proficiencies acquired through the study of French at this level will equip learners with the communication skills to take French 11. This is an intensive course designed to cover essential learning standards from Grades 5 to 10 in an accelerated timeframe, preparing students for French 11.

Coding 11: Python
Programming is a powerful tool for applying computational thinking. Because problem-solving is inherently creative, many challenges can be addressed through coding applications. Classroom activities are project-based and centred on problem-solving, combining online learning to build foundational language skills with larger coding challenges that encourage hands-on learning. This course is well-suited to students who enjoy problem-solving and have strong math skills, as well as those with curious minds who like working both independently and collaboratively. It is designed specifically for beginners who are new to coding.
Design 11
This hands-on course explores the creative and practical applications of design across multiple disciplines, including interior design, graphic design, costuming, and event planning. Students will develop foundational skills in design principles, visual communication, and project execution through real-world, experiential projects. Through hands-on activities, students will explore spatial planning, colour theory, typography, fabric selection, and thematic event coordination. Each major area of design (graphic, clothing, product, and interior) prompts lectures and discussions, assigned analysis exercises, assigned presentations on group research topics, and studio-oriented projects. This course emphasizes creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration, preparing students for future studies or careers in design-related fields. Students with solid visual arts skills (such as drawing or digital illustration) may find that this helps them approach the course more confidently.
Earth Sciences 11
Earth Sciences 11 provides students with an opportunity to understand the scientific principles underlying these issues and to explore sustainable ways to address them. Through project-based learning, students learn the basics of astronomy, geology, hydrology, oceanography and atmospheric sciences while gaining an understanding of Indigenous perspectives on earth systems and their connections with our solar system.
This Grade 11 science elective is designed for students who are passionate about earth and space sciences, interested in sustainability topics, comfortable learning both in and outside the classroom, independent of weather conditions, and interested in learning about First Peoples’ perspectives.
English 10
English 10 students are concurrently enrolled in both Literary Studies 10 and Composition 10. Students will read independently and be assigned nonfiction, novels, short fiction, verse, and Shakespeare. Students will write frequently in a variety of styles, with particular attention to expository essays, synthesis, and journalism. The year-long course concludes with the four-week genre studies unit, during which students are reassigned to specialized classes to study topics such as the romance novel, Stephen King, David Sedaris, children’s literature, or photojournalism.
English First Peoples 10
This course fulfills the Indigenous Studies graduation requirement that all students must complete. English First Peoples 10 students will write in a variety of different styles, investigating oral traditions and the function of storytelling within communication, art, and culture. They will consider a variety of texts and media across a wide selection of genres and explore First Peoples’ principles of learning in their explorations. Towards the end of the year, English First Peoples 10 students will have the opportunity to dive into a genre studies unit, where they complete a passion project in an area of their choice.
French 10
Reading and listening comprehension, creative writing, and oral expression are developed throughout the course, with regular exploration of cultures and perspectives from Francophone countries. Students are assessed through a combination of individual work and collaborative projects. Learning is supported through interactive stories and novels that incorporate the core grammatical structures needed to become confident, effective communicators. French is used as the primary language of instruction.

Mandarin 10
This course builds on the areas of language competency (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) developed in the previous year. Students will develop these skills by immersing themselves in a Mandarin-rich classroom environment supported by visual aids such as posters, signs, and gestures. Language acquisition is fostered through storytelling and engaging classroom discussions. Cultural exploration is an integral part of the course. Activities include making bubble tea, crafting mooncakes for the Moon Festival, writing Spring Couplets, traditional paper-cutting, and participating in a field trip to Victoria’s Chinatown for the Lunar New Year.
Course Prerequisite: Beginner Mandarin or its equivalent. Students should have completed at least 1 year of Mandarin studies.
Marketing & Promotion 11
This is a broad, fast-paced course that functions as an introduction to the Grade 12 and AP business courses offered at Brentwood. Students will practice and master essential skills, including effective group work, keyboarding, business writing, and presenting. They will also learn basic word processing, spreadsheet, and publishing skills using Google, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Products. Issues such as business etiquette, ethics, and social enterprise are also examined.
Mathematics 10
Math 10 starts students on the pathway designed to provide them with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs. Main topics include algebra, geometry, trigonometry, number operations, and data analysis. Primary emphasis is placed on symbolic manipulation, sophisticated generalization of mathematical concepts, and the development of formal mathematics. The following mathematical processes are emphasized throughout the year: communication, problem solving, connections, reasoning, mental mathematics, technology, estimation, and visualization.
Science 10
Science 10 is all about giving students a broad foundation in science. The skills they learn in this course will give them an understanding and appreciation of how science is done and how it impacts our world. Science 10 is divided into four big ideas; energy change during chemical reactions, DNA as the basis for the diversity of living things, the law of conservation of energy and its applications in our lives, and that the formation and evolution of the universe can be explained by the Big Bang theory.
In chemistry, different types of chemical reactions are examined and described in terms of word and symbol equations. Lessons will regularly be brought out of the classroom to explore how reactions affect us and our environment. Radioactivity of various kinds is explored.
Problems associated with radioactivity are discussed and linked to such things as the development of atomic power and nuclear weapons alongside the fight against cancer, to name a few.
The biology portion of Science 10 examines DNA, how it functions and how it is passed down from generation to generation in all living things as the carrier of heritable traits. Students will learn the theoretical framework of genetics and then work to apply it to themselves and the environment around them, including how it relates to natural selection as a mechanism for evolution.
Energy is a major topic in physics. In Science 10, students learn how to quantify different forms of energy and explore how those energy types are transformed from one form to another, especially the conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy, and vice versa, in systems in motion.
The questions asked in astronomy are some of the grandest in scale in all of science. Students will learn how modern astronomical observations are made and learn how the timeless practice of looking at the stars has differed through time and across societies.
The goal for Science 10 is to prepare students to make informed decisions about their place in the world. Regardless of whether students pursue science at the senior or post-secondary levels, this course fosters the foundational scientific literacy critical to being a well-informed, thoughtful citizen in our modern, global society.
Science 10: Sustainable Engineering
This course provides students with an introduction to sustainable engineering by integrating the main principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and astronomy, aligned with the Science 10 curriculum. Through project-based learning, students will learn the basics of the engineering design process while exploring sustainability challenges our planet faces and investigating possible solutions. This option for Science 10 is designed for students who are passionate about science, interested in sustainability topics, comfortable with the challenge of a faster-paced science course, comfortable with project-based learning, and interested in learning both in and outside of the classroom.
Social Studies 10
Social Studies 10 engages students in social studies inquiry to examine the social, political, economic, and global forces that have shaped Canada and the world from 1918 to the present. Students explore the influence of political ideologies and institutions, the effects of domestic and international conflict, and the development and roles of Canadian, First Nations, and other political systems. The course also addresses the impact of discriminatory policies and historical injustices on both Canadian and global populations. Through this study, students develop the ability to analyze diverse perspectives, evaluate evidence, and make reasoned judgments about past and contemporary issues. In addition, the course situates Canada within a global context, emphasizing Canada’s foreign policy as a middle power, its peacekeeping, its participation in twenty-first-century conflicts, and its international economic relationships.
Spanish 10
In this course, students learn through listening to, reading, and writing stories, with language instruction further supported by songs, games, and short videos. Both individual and group work are incorporated, including projects based on novels read in class. Stories and novels are used to introduce more advanced grammatical structures in meaningful contexts, supporting deeper understanding. Instruction is delivered primarily in Spanish, using a communicative approach grounded in comprehensible input and emphasizing both oral and written communication. The course also places significant emphasis on culture, as students continue to explore the diverse traditions of the Spanish-speaking world.
Course Prerequisite: Spanish 9 or equivalent.
Grade 11 Courses
During Grade 11, Brentwood students make important decisions regarding their prospective university placement. Choices made regarding electives can and do reverberate into Grade 12 and beyond.
The foundation for these choices begins in Grade 10—with a thorough orientation to elective course options and their implications for Grade 12 and post-secondary. All Grade 11 students are expected to tentatively develop university plans and are encouraged to attend university sessions to broaden their knowledge of the options available in Canada and abroad. For those interested in American universities, we also provide an extensive program through the post-secondary counselling support team.
Grade 11 is the “pre-AP” year that provides a foundation for success in Advanced Placement learning experiences—and exams—in Grade 12. Advanced Placement is one option that allows students to pursue academic excellence; all students are encouraged to become involved in the wide range of opportunities at this level. In several electives, there is the possibility of taking AP exams in Grade 11.
With today’s increasingly competitive and expensive post-secondary institutions, the experience of having taken Advanced Placement courses is not only excellent preparation for university-level education, but can also enable direct placement into higher-level courses and credits to alleviate tuition burdens.
20th Century World History 12
This course is designed to build competencies of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creative thinking while exploring the dominant themes of nationalism, imperialism, technological developments, and conflict in the 20th century. To enhance their understanding of global politics, students will participate in forum discussions by role-playing as delegates to represent diverse perspectives, analyze political cartoons and documents for deeper context, and deliver oral presentations on significant events, figures, and big ideas. Reading in support of the course curriculum is essential. Students must be willing to speak in class and advocate a political perspective.esearch and citing skills. Advanced Design 12
This course expands on the design principles that students may have been introduced to in earlier studies. It will elevate students’ learning from “making” to “thinking”, moving beyond how to make things into why things are made, who they are for, what impact they have, and how design shapes behaviour and society. This course will be a rigorous, intellectual course, not just a hands-on elective. It will prepare students to think critically, create responsibly, and navigate complex real-world problems—competencies that align strongly with our school’s goals and 21st-century learning outcomes.
Students will produce portfolio-quality work while developing professional habits such as project management, documentation, and constructive response to feedback. Equally important, the course emphasizes responsible and sustainable making, encouraging students to consider environmental impact, accessibility, and ethical design decisions.
Course Prerequisite: It is recommended that students have taken a design-based course prior to taking this course.
Anatomy & Physiology 12
This course examines the biological processes that support life from the molecular to the organismal level. Students study biological molecules, metabolism, and enzymes, as well as how the body regulates its internal environment and transports materials across cell membranes. The course explores DNA replication and gene expression, the role of proteins in determining cell structure and function, and the principles of genomics and biotechnology, emphasizing the connection between microscopic processes and larger biological organization. In addition, students investigate organ systems, focusing on their structure, function, interdependence, and their role in maintaining homeostasis.
Prerequisite: Chemistry 11 completed (recommended) or concurrent is recommended
AP Biology 11
This course covers key topics that explain the structure, function, and continuity of life. Students explore biomolecules and how they form the foundation of living organisms; examine cell structures and functions, with a focus on membranes and the movement of materials across them; and study the principles of evolution and natural selection. The course also investigates DNA as the blueprint of living organisms, the stages of the cell cycle, and the mechanisms of heredity. In addition, students are introduced to biotechnology and its applications in modern science. This course is the first half of what is equivalent to a first-year university course, and so there is a large amount of content and ability to synthesize the material. Notes, readings, labs, activities, and projects are all involved with this course.
AP Chemistry 11

AP Comparative Government & Politics 12
Through the lens of six countries (the United Kingdom, Nigeria, China, Russia, Iran, and Mexico), students will explore the questions of: Who has power? Why? How do they wield it? Is it democratic? How is that assessed? What structures are in place to hold or share power?. This course will help students better understand global political questions and ensure they are informed citizens of the world who can apply a critical perspective to political issues. The most important quality students can bring is a profound interest in politics and governance. Much of the course is discussion-based: seminars, current events discussions, presentations, and guest speakers. Students will write the AP Comparative Government and Politics exam in May.
AP Computer Science A 12
AP Computer Science A is an in-depth study of the Java computer language. The students will learn the basics of object-oriented programming and build a foundation in programming that will prepare them for any post-secondary discipline. Units of study include: control structures; classes and objects; interfaces; arrays; array lists; inheritance and classes; streams and files; recursion; binary search tree, analysis of algorithms and sorting methods. Designed to provide practical coding and problem-solving skills, the course serves as a foundation for future studies or careers in computer science and computer engineering. Prior coding experience is highly recommended. Students will write the AP Computer Science A exam in May.
AP Computer Science Principles 12
AP Computer Science Principles is an entry-level course that introduces students to the foundations of modern computing. The curriculum does not assume prior knowledge of computing concepts, though knowledge of introductory algebra is assumed. The course covers a broad range of foundational topics, including programming, algorithms, the Internet, big data, digital privacy and security, and the societal impacts of computing. Major units of study include: digital information, the internet, introduction to algorithms and programming, big data: research and privacy, building apps, and creating and exploring tasks. Students will complete two in-class performance tasks and write the AP Computer Science Principles exam in May.
AP English 11
Students who elect to take the AP option will cover all the English 11 curriculum, most of which will be completed by March, plus write many timed, in-class synthesis, analysis, and argument papers. Students, in fact, are assessed and receive credit for both courses.
Students’ AP marks will be based on the AP-specific work she does―predominantly in the spring―in preparation for the College Board paper.
This is an accelerated environment recommended for students who were consistently proficient or extending in English 10 competencies and who are willing to read and write about unfamiliar texts under timed conditions.
Kids who struggle to meet deadlines should stay away. It requires more reading and much more critical writing than English 11, but it is also the bee’s knees and the cat’s pyjamas.
AP Macroeconomics 12
This college-level course introduces students to the principles that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price-level determination. It also develops students’ familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data to analyze, describe, and explain economic concepts. Students will explore concepts such as GDP, inflation, interest rates, unemployment rates, fiscal and monetary policies, foreign exchange and bonds, and, most importantly, how these factors impact everyday life. Students will write the AP Macroeconomics exam in May.
AP Microeconomics 12
AP Microeconomics is a college-level course that introduces students to the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual economic decision-makers. The course also develops students’ familiarity with the operation of product and factor markets, distributions of income, market failure, and the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity in the economy. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data to analyze, describe, and explain economic concepts. Students will write the AP Microeconomics exam in May.
AP Physics 11
The AP version of this course is very different from Physics 11 and explores physics concepts in greater depth and mathematical rigour. Students study kinematics, focusing on how an object’s motion can be described, analyzed, and predicted; dynamics, examining the forces involved in one-dimensional, two-dimensional, circular, and rotational motion; statics; and fluid mechanics. The course also covers work and energy, as well as momentum and impulse, providing a comprehensive foundation in advanced mechanics. This is a fast-paced, rigorous course in which students will continuously engage in problem-solving and experimental design, stretching their mathematical skills. Graphical analysis is a critical component of the work in this course. Students will write the AP Physics 1 exam in May.
Course Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus 11 completed (recommended) or concurrent is required.
AP Research 12
This course prepares students to conduct original research in any discipline at the university level. Students design, plan, and implement a year-long investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defence.
Course Prerequisite: AP Seminar 11 with at least an AP score of 3.

AP Studio Art 11
This course presents students with the challenge of researching, defining, producing, assessing, refining and reflecting a body of work in the fields of art and/or design.
This course is studio-based, with time spent in active, self-guided studio work during both the academic (morning) class time and an art afternoon commitment (beyond regular Brentwood Arts requirements). Instruction consists of broadly defined assignments, individual coaching, and guided group critique. Additional instruction is occasionally provided to provide exemplars from the worlds of art and design, outline technical issues related to art-making or curatorial practice, or to discuss post-secondary paths and career opportunities related to art and design.
AP Studio Art 12 has a final AP exam that takes the form of an adjudicated portfolio submission. Students are not required to make the submission while in AP Studio Art 11; those students are typically on track to spend a second year in AP Studio Art 12 in Grade 12 and submit that portfolio then. If students start in Grade 11 in this course, they should note that Ministry credit is only awarded at the end of their second year in the course with the completion of the AP portfolio submission.
Students should only take this class if they are passionate about making, feel comfortable in a studio environment and are capable of self-directed, inquiry-based learning. Students should be prepared to find time in their schedules for several hours per week of independent studio work above and beyond the time commitments already listed. It will be very challenging to find success in this course without a strong routine.

AP World History 12
In AP World History: Modern, students investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes from 1200 to the present. Students develop and use the same skills, practices, and methods historians employ: analyzing primary and secondary sources; developing historical arguments; making historical connections; and reasoning about comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time. The course explores six themes to connect historical developments across different times and places: humans and the environment; cultural developments and interactions; governance; economic systems; social interactions and organization; and technology and innovation. Students will write the AP World History Modern exam in May.
Course Prerequisite: It is recommended, though not required, that students complete a regular senior social studies course before taking this course.
Beginner French
This course will offer students who did not begin Core French in the elementary grades the opportunity to pursue French at the secondary level. It is a course for beginners, designed for anyone with no French knowledge who wants to learn. The proficiencies acquired through the study of French at this level will equip learners with the communication skills to take French 11. This is an intensive course designed to cover essential learning standards from Grades 5 to 10 in an accelerated timeframe, preparing students for French 11.
Beginner Mandarin
This course covers all language competencies: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will develop these skills by immersing themselves in a Mandarin-rich classroom environment supported by visual aids such as posters, signs, and gestures. Language acquisition is fostered through storytelling and engaging classroom discussions. Cultural exploration is an integral part of the course. Activities include making bubble tea, crafting mooncakes for the Moon Festival, writing Spring Couplets, traditional paper-cutting, and participating in a field trip to Victoria’s Chinatown for Lunar New Year.
Beginner Spanish
This course will offer students who did not begin Spanish studies in previous grades the opportunity to pursue them at the secondary level. It is a course for beginners, designed for anyone with limited or no Spanish knowledge who wants to learn. Chemistry 11
Chemistry 11 examines how elements and compounds are measured, observed, quantified, and transformed. Areas of study include atoms and molecules, matter and energy, the mole, solubility and organic chemistry. The course emphasizes laboratory-based learning, where students develop skills in experimental design, laboratory techniques, data and error analysis, conceptual modelling, and scientific communication. Much of the course is analytical and conceptual, making strong mathematical reasoning a vital asset.
Course Prerequisite: Proficient in Science 10 and Math 10 is highly recommended.
Coding 11: Python
Programming is a powerful tool for applying computational thinking. Because problem-solving is inherently creative, many challenges can be addressed through coding applications. Classroom activities are project-based and centred on problem-solving, combining online learning to build foundational language skills with larger coding challenges that encourage hands-on learning. This course is well-suited to students who enjoy problem-solving and have strong math skills, as well as those with curious minds who like working both independently and collaboratively. It is designed specifically for beginners who are new to coding.
Comparative Cultures 12
Comparative Cultures 12 is a course designed to give students an understanding and knowledge of the accomplishments of past civilizations. This course will examine the beliefs, accomplishments and values of Global civilizations that have greatly influenced the world. This course explores how the diversity of a single culture deepens our understanding of others, while examining how the interplay between belief systems, social structures, and language shapes artistic expression and how geographic factors drive the evolution of agriculture, trade, and complex societies. Learning in this course occurs through group discussions, reading and analysis, and guided and self-directed inquiry projects.
Contemporary Indigenous Studies 12
This course satisfies both the Indigenous Studies and the senior Social Studies graduation requirements. This course provides students with exposure to contemporary Indigenous cultures and societies, as well as to historical, political, and social topics. As students navigate the journey toward Truth and Reconciliation, they will seek to develop a sophisticated, informed understanding of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians. This course relies on experiential learning and authentic tasks. Students will be required to participate in class discussions, read a novel, do group projects and follow current events.
Earth Sciences 11
Earth Sciences 11 provides students with an opportunity to understand the scientific principles underlying these issues and to explore sustainable ways to address them. Through project-based learning, students learn the basics of astronomy, geology, hydrology, oceanography and atmospheric sciences while gaining an understanding of Indigenous perspectives on earth systems and their connections with our solar system.
This Grade 11 science elective is designed for students who are passionate about earth and space sciences, interested in sustainability topics, comfortable learning both in and outside the classroom, independent of weather conditions, and interested in learning about First Peoples’ perspectives.
Economics 12
This course explores economic theory to investigate the “economic problem,” the fundamental challenge facing all societies: how to satisfy unlimited wants and needs with limited resources. Students will learn about macro- and micro-economics, as well as the structure and operation of the Canadian economic system. From studying the profound thoughts of economists like Smith, Ricardo, and Marx, to exploring contemporary economic paradigms, this course ensures you’re well-versed in the ideas that have shaped nations.
English 11
English 11 students will explore specific themes, periods, authors, or areas of the world through literary works (fiction and non-fiction) and a variety of media. Students will increase their literacy skills through close reading of appropriately challenging texts. Possible areas of focus, as they relate to written composition, include narrative, expository, descriptive, persuasive and opinion pieces. Students will engage in the planning, drafting and editing processes while writing for specific audiences and specific disciplines. This course will also emphasize how to cite sources, assess the credibility of evidence, and evaluate the quality and reliability of sources.
Entrepreneurship 12
This course will allow the students to become fully immersed in both the theory and practical aspects of entrepreneurship. Along with a large amount of theory covered during the year, the students will face the challenge of proposing, developing, and running a small business for a brief period. Later in the year, students will be required to develop a much larger and more complex business venture and implement it during the annual Brentwood Regatta in April. All participants will experience both the positive and negative aspects of cooperative and competitive teamwork. Those students who are not comfortable working in teams or competing with others will really have to stretch themselves out of their comfort zones to succeed in this course.

Financial Accounting 12
In this course, students will master basic accounting principles and cycles while learning to implement effective internal control systems for business management. They will also gain the skills to evaluate a company’s financial health through statement analysis and develop a functional understanding of stock market terminology and activity. There is a heavy emphasis on learning through case studies. Students will initially focus on understanding and building financial statements. As the year progresses, a larger emphasis will be placed on analysis and critical thinking. Strong math and organizational skills will be assets.

Foundations of Mathematics 12
Foundations of Math 12 builds students’ understanding of graphs, probability, statistics, finance, and geometry, helping them make informed decisions about their social, financial, and intellectual lives beyond Brentwood. Many projects are based on real-world applications: figuring out how long it will take to pay off a mortgage for a dream house, investing in the stock market, and analyzing trends using real data. Students are introduced to online apps that help them with everything from managing their finances to making math-based art.
French 11
This course targets all areas of language competency—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—using an acquisition-based approach. The emphasis is on acquiring language naturally rather than through isolated grammar drills or vocabulary lists. Students will have many opportunities to build on and extend their existing language skills through novel studies, cultural explorations, personal and formal writing, interactive games, and dictées. French is used as the primary language of interaction and instruction throughout the course.

Human Geography 12
This course explores how analyzing data from a variety of sources helps us better understand our globally connected world. Students examine how demographic and physical features, natural resources, and human activities shape patterns and population distribution, and how human activities alter landscapes in diverse ways. Through this lens, the course highlights how geographic regions can encompass a wide range of physical features and human interactions, revealing the complex relationships between people and the environments they inhabit. Learning activities will involve group discussions, reading analyses, and guided and self-directed inquiry projects.
Law Studies 12
This course gives students a broad exposure to the fundamentals of Canadian Law and ongoing opportunities to enhance and apply this knowledge in practical ways. Traditional legal subjects such as criminal law, torts, and contracts will be examined, while students also gain knowledge and insight into the importance and relevant topics of constitutional, human rights, Aboriginal, and family law. Learning how to think critically and solve problems given relevant case law is highly emphasized in this course. Both written and oral advocacy skills will be developed and assessed.
Life Sciences 11
This course provides students with an understanding of the interconnectedness of life on Earth. This course explores what defines life, how it is organized, and the unifying role of evolution. Students examine prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and investigate how life exists in both single-celled and multicelled forms. They study the science of classification and how it has shaped our understanding of life’s remarkable diversity, while extending their exploration of microscopic environments to include bacteria, non-living viruses, and their impacts on the health of wildlife and humans. Throughout the course, students engage in an in-depth study of evolution by natural selection, including the contributions of Darwin and his contemporaries, and examine how species change over time, adapt, and become extinct. The course concludes with a focused study of ecology and the relationships among organisms and their environments.
Mandarin 11

Marine Sciences 11
Do the unknown frontiers of the deep and its ecosystems keep you up at night? Do you marvel at the majesty of the ocean’s creatures and their abilities to live and thrive in a myriad of habitats? Our Brentwood campus lies adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and this opens up incredible opportunities to explore the field of Marine Science. In this course, you will learn about the cycles and processes that sustain life and of the interplay between life and the aquatic environment in our ocean ecosystems. Through scientific inquiry, research and project-based learning, you will be involved in scientific investigations that will lead to an increased level of knowledge about marine science. This course will incorporate exercises in the lab as well as extensive field components where you’ll get hands-on experience on and perhaps in the water. We will also discuss current issues surrounding the conservation of ocean ecosystems.
Due to the extensive environmental components taught in this course, dual credits will be granted for Life Sciences 11 and Environmental Science 11 making this, by extension, a more rigorous course than Life Sciences 11 alone.
Physics 11
This course explores the fundamental principles governing motion, forces, energy, and waves. Students learn how an object’s motion can be described, analyzed, and predicted, and how forces influence changes in that motion. The course also examines energy in its various forms, emphasizing conservation and its ability to do work. In addition, students study mechanical waves and how they transfer energy through a medium without transferring matter. The different course activities will provide students with a wide variety of opportunities to learn the concepts and understand the course ideas while developing the skills required for scientific and technological inquiry, problem-solving, communicating scientific ideas and results, and working collaboratively. The approach in this course is mathematical, and students are expected to be able to solve algebraic and numerical problems comfortably.

Political Studies 12
This course explores the importance of understanding how political decisions are made as a foundation for informed and engaged citizenship. It examines how political institutions and ideologies shape the exercise of power and influence political outcomes. It considers how decision-making in democratic systems of government is affected by the distribution of political and social power. This course explores international and Canadian issues, requires reading of political philosophy and current-events style texts, and requires active communication (both oral and written). The class will stimulate learning through class discussions, portfolios on political issues, examinations of global political issues, analyses of political philosophies, MUN-style simulations, and political speech analysis and presentations.
Pre-Calculus 11
Pre-Calculus 11 hones abstract algebra skills, fluency with numerical operations, proportional reasoning, and competency with functions, building a foundation for all higher mathematics. Although it emphasizes skills and vocabulary found in calculus, these skills are used in everything from science to finance. In addition to regular self-guided practice, Pre-calculus 11 emphasizes the development of communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in mathematics.

Social Justice 12
This course focuses on the interconnected nature of social justice issues and explores how individual worldviews shape and inform our understanding of them. Students examine the complex causes of social injustice and their lasting impacts on society, and consider how social justice initiatives can bring about meaningful change for individuals and systems. Through investigations into and reflections on intersectionality, privilege and power, LGBTQ2 issues, Indigenous awareness, and gender equality, to name a few, students will be challenged to step outside their comfort zone and work in their stretch or risk zones. Thus, students must be open to challenging their current mindset to adopt a growth mindset.
Spanish 11
This course explores the connection between language and culture while providing the opportunity to improve all language skills in a very interactive way. Students develop their skills in reading and listening comprehension, as well as in (creative) writing and oral communication. Students learn through interactive stories and novels that include all the basic grammatical structures necessary to become capable communicators. At the same time, a greater emphasis is placed on Hispanic cultures from around the world.

Statistics 12
Statistics 12 is a course designed to develop students’ mathematical understanding of the tools used to collect, analyze, and interpret data. Students will explore topics such as variation and distribution, probability and uncertainty, and how data drives decision-making and policy creation. The course emphasizes critical thinking, as students will analyze real-world data, connect mathematics to real-world contexts, and tackle projects that require critical analysis and creativity. This course is intended for students considering post-secondary programs in STEM or data-driven fields such as the social sciences, politics, or business.
Urban & Sustainability Studies 12
This course explores the dynamic relationship among urbanization, society, and sustainability. Students will examine how urban spaces are shaped by geographic, economic, political, and social forces, and how decision-making in urban planning can create more sustainable futures. Focusing on the question: How can society and physical spaces be adapted to create a better world?, students are asked to think critically and collaboratively about local, national, and international examples of urban design, both past and present. Students will analyze the impact of government policies, urban planning decisions, and innovative sustainability approaches through project-based learning.
Grade 12 Courses
During Grade 12, students take on key roles in the houses and the School as they prepare to graduate and begin their post-secondary journey. The curriculum focuses on building skills to instill confidence in our students and empower them to make important decisions. The Grade 12 electives include numerous AP options, to potentially earn first-year credit and gain entry into second-year university courses. It is a year of support and collaboration with peers, advisors, post-secondary counsellors, mentors, and parents.
20th Century World History 12
This course is designed to build competencies of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creative thinking while exploring the dominant themes of nationalism, imperialism, technological developments, and conflict in the 20th century. To enhance their understanding of global politics, students will participate in forum discussions by role-playing as delegates to represent diverse perspectives, analyze political cartoons and documents for deeper context, and deliver oral presentations on significant events, figures, and big ideas. Advanced Design 12
This course expands on the design principles that students may have been introduced to in earlier studies. It will elevate students’ learning from “making” to “thinking”, moving beyond how to make things into why things are made, who they are for, what impact they have, and how design shapes behaviour and society. This course will be a rigorous, intellectual course, not just a hands-on elective. It will prepare students to think critically, create responsibly, and navigate complex real-world problems—competencies that align strongly with our school’s goals and 21st-century learning outcomes.
Students will produce portfolio-quality work while developing professional habits such as project management, documentation, and constructive response to feedback. Equally important, the course emphasizes responsible and sustainable making, encouraging students to consider environmental impact, accessibility, and ethical design decisions.

Advanced Topics in Math 12
This advanced course covers key topics, including an introduction to the central principles of Linear Algebra, Calculus II, and Number Theory. Students also explore the nature of mathematical proof as they engage with a wide range of challenging, thought-provoking problems. Throughout the course, students apply algebraic techniques, graphing, technology, and visualizations to solve complex mathematical problems. Tools such as Desmos, GeoGebra, and matrix calculators are used regularly to support learning and deepen understanding.
This course is recommended for students planning to pursue math-intensive post-secondary studies. It is particularly well-suited for those interested in engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry, finance, and actuarial science, as well as for students who have a strong passion for mathematics.

Anatomy & Physiology 12
This course examines the biological processes that support life from the molecular to the organismal level. Students study biological molecules, metabolism, and enzymes, as well as how the body regulates its internal environment and transports materials across cell membranes. The course explores DNA replication and gene expression, the role of proteins in determining cell structure and function, and the principles of genomics and biotechnology, emphasizing the connection between microscopic processes and larger biological organization. In addition, students investigate organ systems, focusing on their structure, function, interdependence, and their role in maintaining homeostasis.

AP Biology 12
This course focuses on the core principles that explain how living systems function and interact. Students examine how evolution drives both the diversity and unity of life, and how biological systems use energy and molecular building blocks to grow, reproduce, and maintain dynamic homeostasis. The course also explores how living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes, and how interactions within and between biological systems give rise to complex and interconnected properties. There is an emphasis on hands-on activities, such as experiments, projects, and fieldwork, to develop science skills and thinking. Students will write the AP Biology exam in May.

AP Calculus AB 12
AP Calculus AB emphasizes a deep understanding of fundamental calculus concepts while providing students with experience in a variety of methods and real-world applications. Students are expected to use definitions and theorems to construct logical arguments and justify their conclusions. The course adopts a multi-representational approach, exploring calculus concepts and problems through graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal perspectives. Clear and precise communication of methods, reasoning, justifications, and conclusions is a central focus throughout the course. AP Calculus AB is designed to be equivalent to a first-semester college calculus course and concentrates on differential and integral calculus. Topics include limits, continuity, differentiation and its applications, integration, differential equations, and applications of integration. Students will write the AP Calculus AB exam in May.

AP Chemistry 12
In addition to the units covered in Chemistry 12, the AP course adds Thermodynamics and Applications of Thermodynamics. AP is faster-paced than regular Chemistry 12 and adds complexity in some units. Students will engage in problem-solving for open-ended theory, multiple-choice calculations, and guided inquiry investigations.
Solid algebra skills are essential: formulae, rearrangement of formulae, substitution of variables, and calculation with proper presentation skills on paper are employed regularly. Students will write the AP Chemistry exam in May.

AP Chinese Language & Culture 12
This course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP Chinese Language & Culture course is designed to develop students’ proficiencies in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin. The course emphasizes communication in real-life contexts, fostering cultural understanding and appreciation through an exploration of Chinese traditions, practices, and contemporary society. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Mandarin. Students will write the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam in May.

AP Comparative Government & Politics 12
Through the lens of six countries (the United Kingdom, Nigeria, China, Russia, Iran, and Mexico), students will explore the questions of: Who has power? Why? How do they wield it? Is it democratic? How is that assessed? What structures are in place to hold or share power?. This course will help students better understand global political questions and ensure they are informed citizens of the world who can apply a critical perspective to political issues. The most important quality students can bring is a profound interest in politics and governance. Much of the course is discussion-based: seminars, current events discussions, presentations, and guest speakers. Students will write the AP Comparative Government and Politics exam in May.
AP Computer Science A 12
AP Computer Science A is an in-depth study of the Java computer language. The students will learn the basics of object-oriented programming and build a foundation in programming that will prepare them for any post-secondary discipline. Units of study include: control structures; classes and objects; interfaces; arrays; array lists; inheritance and classes; streams and files; recursion; binary search tree, analysis of algorithms and sorting methods. Designed to provide practical coding and problem-solving skills, the course serves as a foundation for future studies or careers in computer science and computer engineering. Prior coding experience is highly recommended. Students will write the AP Computer Science A exam in May.
AP Computer Science Principles 12
AP Computer Science Principles is an entry-level course that introduces students to the foundations of modern computing. The curriculum does not assume prior knowledge of computing concepts, though knowledge of introductory algebra is assumed. The course covers a broad range of foundational topics, including programming, algorithms, the Internet, big data, digital privacy and security, and the societal impacts of computing. Major units of study include: digital information, the internet, introduction to algorithms and programming, big data: research and privacy, building apps, and creating and exploring tasks. Students will complete two in-class performance tasks and write the AP Computer Science Principles exam in May.
AP English Literature and Composition 12
This dual credit course combines the advanced literary analysis of AP English Literature and Composition with the comprehensive, skills-based approach of English Studies 12. The university-level course focuses on reading, analyzing, and writing about imaginative literature (fiction, poetry, drama) from various periods. Students engage in close reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature to deepen their understanding of how writers use language to convey both meaning and pleasure. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes, as well as its use of figurative language, imagery, and symbolism. Writing assignments include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays that require students to analyze and interpret literary works. Students will write the AP English Literature & Composition exam in May.

AP Environmental Science 12
This course focuses on the fundamental ideas that shape ecological and environmental systems. Students examine how energy transfer and conversion underlie all ecological processes and how Earth functions as one interconnected system whose natural and biogeochemical processes change over time and space and vary in their ability to recover from disturbances. The course also explores interactions among different species and their environments, with particular attention to how humans have altered natural systems over millions of years. Emphasis is placed on sustainability and on developing practices that support the long-term survival of both human societies and natural systems. Students have the opportunity to develop critical and scientific thinking skills and explore a wide range of interconnected topics. The course helps build a framework of knowledge and concepts that provides a basis for examining complex ideas. Students will write the AP Environmental Science exam in May.
AP French Language 12
The AP French Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This interactive class allows students to develop language skills and learn about a variety of topics related to the francophone culture. Learning activities include listening and reading comprehension, writing and oral communication tasks, and novel studies that support language development. Throughout the course, students also analyze a variety of authentic audiovisual resources to strengthen their understanding of real-world language use. Students will write the AP French Language and Culture exam in May.

AP Macroeconomics 12
This college-level course introduces students to the principles that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price-level determination. It also develops students’ familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data to analyze, describe, and explain economic concepts. Students will explore concepts such as GDP, inflation, interest rates, unemployment rates, fiscal and monetary policies, foreign exchange and bonds, and, most importantly, how these factors impact everyday life. Students will write the AP Macroeconomics exam in May.
AP Microeconomics 12
AP Microeconomics is a college-level course that introduces students to the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual economic decision-makers. The course also develops students’ familiarity with the operation of product and factor markets, distributions of income, market failure, and the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity in the economy. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data to analyze, describe, and explain economic concepts. Students will write the AP Microeconomics exam in May.
AP Physics 12
AP Physics 12 builds on the work in AP Physics 11 and continues to focus on concepts involving forces and fields, energy conservation, and systems of particles. These concepts are reflected in the study of thermodynamics, electrostatics, circuits, electromagnetism, waves, optics, rotational motion, and modern physics. Problem-solving, both individually and in groups, is a large part of the course. Students should enjoy exploring physical phenomena, apply their mathematical skills to that understanding, and engage with others to ensure they can articulate their knowledge effectively. Students must be more than comfortable with their math skills, as they will be employed daily and assumed to be highly proficient. Students will write the AP Physics 2 exam in May.

AP Psychology 12
This course introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. While considering the studies that have shaped the field, students explore and apply psychological theories, key concepts, and phenomena associated with major units of study, including biological bases of behaviour, cognition, development, learning, social psychology, personality, and mental and physical health. Throughout the course, students apply psychological concepts and employ psychological research methods and data interpretation to evaluate claims, consider evidence, and communicate ideas effectively. Students will write the AP Psychology exam in May.
AP Research 12
This course prepares students to conduct original research in any discipline at the university level. Students design, plan, and implement a year-long investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defence.
Course Prerequisite: AP Seminar 11 with at least an AP score of 3.
AP Spanish Language 12
The AP Spanish Language course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This interactive class allows students to develop all of their language skills and learn about a variety of topics related to the Hispanic culture. Learning activities include listening and reading comprehension, writing and oral communication tasks, and novel studies that support language development. Throughout the course, students also analyze a variety of authentic audiovisual resources to strengthen their understanding of real-world language use. Students will write the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam in May.
Course Prerequisite: Recommended for current students who have completed Spanish 12, those with significant Spanish immersion experience, and native speakers.
AP Studio Art 12
This course presents students with the challenge of researching, defining, producing, assessing, refining and reflecting a body of work in the fields of art and/or design.
This course is studio-based, with time spent in active, self-guided studio work during both the academic (morning) class time and an art afternoon commitment (beyond regular Brentwood Arts requirements). Instruction consists of broadly defined assignments, individual coaching, and guided group critique. Additional instruction is occasionally provided to provide exemplars from the worlds of art and design, outline technical issues related to art-making or curatorial practice, or to discuss post-secondary paths and career opportunities related to art and design. The final AP exam for this course takes the form of an adjudicated portfolio submission; however, students who are permitted to take the course in Grade 11 typically are on track to spend a second year in the course in Grade 12 and submit that portfolio then. If students start in Grade 11 in this course, they should note that Ministry credit is only awarded at the end of their second year in the course with the completion of the AP portfolio submission.
Students should only take this class if they are passionate about making, feel comfortable in a studio environment and are capable of self-directed, inquiry-based learning. Students should be prepared to find time in their schedules for several hours per week of independent studio work above and beyond the time commitments already listed. It will be very challenging to find success in this course without a strong routine.

AP World History 12
In AP World History: Modern, students investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes from 1200 to the present. Students develop and use the same skills, practices, and methods historians employ: analyzing primary and secondary sources; developing historical arguments; making historical connections; and reasoning about comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time. The course explores six themes to connect historical developments across different times and places: humans and the environment; cultural developments and interactions; governance; economic systems; social interactions and organization; and technology and innovation. Students will write the AP World History Modern exam in May.
Course Prerequisite: It is recommended, though not required, that students complete a regular senior social studies course before taking this course.
Art Foundation
This course is offered to students in Grades 10, 11, and 12.
Art Foundation is a course designed for beginners in Grades 10, 11, and 12. Students are encouraged to develop ideas and creative/critical thinking while working on assignments that address the visual language of Art and Design. You may be introduced to painting, graphic design, photography, digital imaging, and drawing. In addition, assignments will be linked to aspects of 20th-century art history to allow you to place your own work within a global perspective.
Calculus 12
Calculus deals with three big ideas:

Change: we can explore rates of change or the accumulated change in a variety of contexts including real-world applications and abstract scenarios.

Limits: we can examine the idea of an instantaneous rate of change and other concepts by using the idea of a limit.

Functions: we can analyze the behaviours of functions by relating limits to differentiation and integration, and relating each of these concepts to the others.
Students will solve problems using algebra, graphs, and technology. Any student pursuing studies in the STEM fields or commerce should seriously consider having experience with calculus before entering university. Student success is correlated to mathematical curiosity and work ethic. Calculus is demanding; a very strong foundation in Pre-Calculus 11 is necessary for success in calculus.
Students can only take one of Calculus 12 and AP Calculus AB 12.

Course Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus 12 must be completed concurrently, at least. AP Calculus AB 12 tends to attract those students who have completed Pre-Calculus 12 already.
Chemistry 12
The main units of the course include: Reaction Kinetics, Dynamic Equilibrium, Solubility, Acids & Bases, and Electrochemistry.
If there was one course in all of the senior high school curricula that teach a student concepts and knowledge they cannot easily get anywhere else, including from textbooks, it would be Chemistry 12. This course demands a student be able to read for information in dense word problems, write specific descriptions of theory discussed in class that cannot be vague, be able to navigate a scientific calculator using exponential notation, orders of operations, base 10 logarithms and be able to attach scientific meaning to all of them. Usually, students spend the year either honing their math skills to come up to standard, or their written descriptive skills to answer theory questions; students are seldom sufficiently gifted in both areas in September.
Assessments usually involve several quizzes and lab reports throughout the term, with cumulative or unit tests at least five times over the course of the year.

Comparative Cultures 12
Comparative Cultures 12 is a course designed to give students an understanding and knowledge of the accomplishments of past civilizations. This course will examine the beliefs, accomplishments and values of Global civilizations that have greatly influenced the world. This course explores how the diversity of a single culture deepens our understanding of others, while examining how the interplay between belief systems, social structures, and language shapes artistic expression and how geographic factors drive the evolution of agriculture, trade, and complex societies. Learning in this course occurs through group discussions, reading and analysis, and guided and self-directed inquiry projects.
Contemporary Indigenous Studies 12
This course satisfies both the Indigenous Studies and the senior Social Studies graduation requirements. This course provides students with exposure to contemporary Indigenous cultures and societies, as well as to historical, political, and social topics. As students navigate the journey toward Truth and Reconciliation, they will seek to develop a sophisticated, informed understanding of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians. This course relies on experiential learning and authentic tasks. Students will be required to participate in class discussions, read a novel, do group projects and follow current events.
Creative Writing 12
Creative Writing 12 is designed for students who are interested in exploring and creating a body of work reflective of their ongoing development as a writer. As the year progresses, students will refine their ability to write in complex, controlled styles with effectiveness and impact. Students in this course will develop their skills through writing in various genres, including screenwriting, short stories, poems, dialogue, journaling, and film reviews. This course is not classroom-based. Students receive monthly tasks and plan their own schedules to complete them. This course cannot replace English 12 for post-secondary admissions purposes.
Course Prerequisite: Creative Writing 12 is open to Grade 12 students, by application only.
Economics 12
This course explores economic theory to investigate the “economic problem,” the fundamental challenge facing all societies: how to satisfy unlimited wants and needs with limited resources. Students will learn about macro- and micro-economics, as well as the structure and operation of the Canadian economic system. From studying the profound thoughts of economists like Smith, Ricardo, and Marx, to exploring contemporary economic paradigms, this course ensures you’re well-versed in the ideas that have shaped nations.
English 12
English Studies 12 builds upon and extends students’ previous learning experiences in English courses. It is designed for all students and provides them with opportunities to refine their ability to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts, to think critically and creatively about the uses of language, and to explore texts and literature from diverse sources, in multiple modes, reflective of diverse worldviews. Students will deepen their understanding of themselves and others in a changing world. Students compose a variety of written responses, including expository, synthesis and literary analysis essays.
English First Peoples 12
This course fulfills the Indigenous Studies graduation requirement that all students must complete. Students are expected to demonstrate understanding of sophisticated texts of recognized literary merit and complete challenging assignments to rigorous academic standards. Students will learn from authentic First Peoples’ voices through texts that range from oral, audio, visual, cinematic, and electronic media to novels and non-fiction books. This course incorporates First Peoples’ principles of learning and recognizes the value of First Peoples’ culture and oral traditions.
Entrepreneurship 12
This course will allow the students to become fully immersed in both the theory and practical aspects of entrepreneurship. Along with a large amount of theory covered during the year, the students will face the challenge of proposing, developing, and running a small business for a brief period. Later in the year, students will be required to develop a much larger and more complex business venture and implement it during the annual Brentwood Regatta in April. All participants will experience both the positive and negative aspects of cooperative and competitive teamwork. Those students who are not comfortable working in teams or competing with others will really have to stretch themselves out of their comfort zones to succeed in this course.

Film Studies 12
Film Studies 12 immerses students in the world of visual storytelling, principles of filmmaking, and advanced criticism and theory through screenings, readings, discussion, and written response. By investigating the work of screenwriters, directors, and theorists, students will widen their contemporary and historical knowledge of the film canon providing context to the many societal movements influenced and reflected through the mediums of film and visual media.
Ever wonder why certain films captivate a nation or why your favourite content creators resonate with so many? This course goes behind the lens to decode the power of visual media. Through active discussion and hands-on analysis, you’ll refine your ability to understand, critique, and articulate cinematic significance.
This course will be offered as an evening seminar, once per week.
Financial Accounting 12
In this course, students will master basic accounting principles and cycles while learning to implement effective internal control systems for business management. They will also gain the skills to evaluate a company’s financial health through statement analysis and develop a functional understanding of stock market terminology and activity. There is a heavy emphasis on learning through case studies. Students will initially focus on understanding and building financial statements. As the year progresses, a larger emphasis will be placed on analysis and critical thinking. Strong math and organizational skills will be assets.

Foundations of Mathematics 12
Foundations of Math 12 builds students’ understanding of graphs, probability, statistics, finance, and geometry, helping them make informed decisions about their social, financial, and intellectual lives beyond Brentwood. Many projects are based on real-world applications: figuring out how long it will take to pay off a mortgage for a dream house, investing in the stock market, and analyzing trends using real data. Students are introduced to online apps that help them with everything from managing their finances to making math-based art.
French 12
This course targets all areas of language competency—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—through an acquisition-based approach that emphasizes natural language development rather than isolated grammar drills and vocabulary lists. Learning activities include novel studies, cultural investigations, personal and formal writing, interactive games, and dictées. Students will also extend their learning beyond the classroom through experiences such as a cooking class and regular visits to a local French Immersion elementary school. These opportunities allow students to use French in meaningful contexts actively and continue deepening their language acquisition.
Course Prerequisite: French 11 or its equivalent.
Human Geography 12
This course explores how analyzing data from a variety of sources helps us better understand our globally connected world. Students examine how demographic and physical features, natural resources, and human activities shape patterns and population distribution, and how human activities alter landscapes in diverse ways. Through this lens, the course highlights how geographic regions can encompass a wide range of physical features and human interactions, revealing the complex relationships between people and the environments they inhabit. Learning activities will involve group discussions, reading analyses, and guided and self-directed inquiry projects.
Law Studies 12
This course gives students a broad exposure to the fundamentals of Canadian Law and ongoing opportunities to enhance and apply this knowledge in practical ways. Traditional legal subjects such as criminal law, torts, and contracts will be examined, while students also gain knowledge and insight into the importance and relevant topics of constitutional, human rights, Aboriginal, and family law. Learning how to think critically and solve problems given relevant case law is highly emphasized in this course. Both written and oral advocacy skills will be developed and assessed.
Literary Studies 12
Literary Studies 12 allows students to delve deeply into language and literature. Students will explore specific themes, periods, authors, or areas of the world through literary works (fiction and non-fiction) and a variety of media. Students will increase their literacy skills through close reading of appropriately challenging texts. Possible areas of focus, as they relate to written composition, include narrative, expository, descriptive, persuasive and opinion pieces. This course will also emphasize how to cite sources, assess the credibility of evidence, and evaluate the quality and reliability of sources. This course cannot replace English 12 for post-secondary admissions purposes.
Mandarin 12
This course targets all areas of language competency—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—through an acquisition-based approach that emphasizes natural language development rather than isolated grammar drills and vocabulary lists. Language acquisition is fostered through storytelling and engaging classroom discussions. Students will have opportunities to share about their daily lives at school and home, as well as their plans for the future. Cultural exploration is an integral part of the course. Activities include making bubble tea, crafting mooncakes for the Moon Festival, writing Spring Couplets, traditional paper-cutting, and participating in a field trip to Victoria’s Chinatown for Lunar New Year.
Course Prerequisite: Mandarin 11 or its equivalent. Students should have completed at least 3 years of Mandarin studies.
Philosophy, Politics & Economics 12 (PPE 12)
This course fulfills the senior Social Studies graduation requirement.
The world is changing faster than our best minds can predict. With new technologies, increased global problems, and the interconnectedness of our society, the impact of one action can affect us all. How can we make important policy decisions when we don’t even know what will happen down the line? Can our global economy adapt to the changing market conditions? How many precautions should we take? What is reasonable?
Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) is a seminar-style class that will challenge students to think critically when looking at challenging problems without clear answers. This course will use philosophical thought as a foundational base, to discuss and debate some of the most pressing challenges in our world today.
Physics 12
The main ideas covered in this course include:

This course builds on ideas and skills developed in Physics 11, and topics covered in a rigorous mathematical manner include: vector analysis, relativity, statics, momentum, energy, circular motion, gravitational forces, electrostatics and electromagnetism.
The goals of this course will be met by carrying out mostly paired or group activities in class such as: discussions, exploratory investigations, experimental design, projects and presentations. It has a faster pace than the foundational Physics 11 course. In order to stay on top of the course, students will have to be very disciplined in completing in a timely manner all work assigned.
The approach is highly mathematical and students are expected to have strong math skills.

Political Studies 12
This course explores the importance of understanding how political decisions are made as a foundation for informed and engaged citizenship. It examines how political institutions and ideologies shape the exercise of power and influence political outcomes. It considers how decision-making in democratic systems of government is affected by the distribution of political and social power. This course explores international and Canadian issues, requires reading of political philosophy and current-events style texts, and requires active communication (both oral and written). The class will stimulate learning through class discussions, portfolios on political issues, examinations of global political issues, analyses of political philosophies, MUN-style simulations, and political speech analysis and presentations.
Pre-Calculus 12
Calculus 12 is designed for students who plan to pursue further studies in mathematics or the sciences and who require a deeper understanding of how quantities change in relation to one another. The course features a rigorous workload and a fast-paced delivery of content. To be successful, students should expect to spend approximately one hour of out-of-class work for each instructional lesson. They should have a strong foundation in key mathematical concepts, including algebra, graphing, functions, and trigonometry. Units of study include limits, derivatives and their applications, and integration and its applications.
Course Prerequisite: PreCalculus 12 completed (recommended) or concurrent.
Social Justice 12
This course focuses on the interconnected nature of social justice issues and explores how individual worldviews shape and inform our understanding of them. Students examine the complex causes of social injustice and their lasting impacts on society, and consider how social justice initiatives can bring about meaningful change for individuals and systems. Through investigations into and reflections on intersectionality, privilege and power, LGBTQ2 issues, Indigenous awareness, and gender equality, to name a few, students will be challenged to step outside their comfort zone and work in their stretch or risk zones. Thus, students must be open to challenging their current mindset to adopt a growth mindset.
Spanish 12
The course explores at the connection between language and culture while providing the opportunity to improve all language skills in a very interactive way.
Student develop their skills in reading and listening comprehension, and in writing and oral communication.
Students learn through reading stories and authentic materials that include all the grammatical structures and vocabulary necessary to become a proficient communicator. Activities will include the analysis of audiovisual resources in Spanish. There will be cultural projects at the end of each unit.
There will be plenty of opportunities to refine all your previous language skills. At the same time, the course will afford you the chance to explore rich hispanic cultures from around the world.

Statistics 12
Statistics 12 is a course designed to develop students’ mathematical understanding of the tools used to collect, analyze, and interpret data. Students will explore topics such as variation and distribution, probability and uncertainty, and how data drives decision-making and policy creation. The course emphasizes critical thinking, as students will analyze real-world data, connect mathematics to real-world contexts, and tackle projects that require critical analysis and creativity. This course is intended for students considering post-secondary programs in STEM or data-driven fields such as the social sciences, politics, or business.
Urban & Sustainability Studies 12
This course explores the dynamic relationship among urbanization, society, and sustainability. Students will examine how urban spaces are shaped by geographic, economic, political, and social forces, and how decision-making in urban planning can create more sustainable futures. Focusing on the question: How can society and physical spaces be adapted to create a better world?, students are asked to think critically and collaboratively about local, national, and international examples of urban design, both past and present. Students will analyze the impact of government policies, urban planning decisions, and innovative sustainability approaches through project-based learning.
